Cooling a cake with bread

So my daughters party is tomorrow. I just got back from vacation, my husband needed to get me eggs because well, I had none. That was supposed to take 30 minutes. An hour and fifteen-ish minutes later he arrives with my eggs. I bake the cakes according to the directions, and after setting them on a cooling rack placed a piece of bread on top of each one. This is supposed to keep the cakes from drying out (which is going to be nice because it's about 90 degrees and we have the ceiling fan on.
